EN: Many studies have looked at alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk. So we know from the data that the risk increases by about 14% for every alcoholic drink a day. This risk of 14% is based on the consumption of one alcoholic drink a day (7 a week) over time, that is, on a regular basis. If you have 7 drinks in a week, but then don’t drink for the next two months, your risk would be lower than someone who has 7 drinks each week. This also means that if you just have one less drink at your regular Friday night Zoom get-together, you are reducing your risk by 2%. drinklessforyourbreasts.org/all-about-risk/
EN: What exactly is a “standard” drink? It’s a way of making sure that when we talk about having a beer or a glass of wine or a shot, we’re talking about the same amount of alcohol. In the US, a standard drink is any drink that has 0.6 ounces or 14 grams of pure alcohol. Both the size of the drink (like, how much wine you pour in your glass) and the alcohol content of what you’re pouring (as in, how much pure alcohol is in a certain amount of that wine) make a difference. So it isn’t just about counting the number of “drinks” you have, but also noticing the alcohol content of whatever you’re drinking. Check the label for the “%ABV” (which stands for ‘percent alcohol by volume’), check your drink size, and check our website to learn more: drinklessforyourbreasts.org/what-is-a-drink/
