The primary aim of this project is to examine the growing substance abuse treatment gap in the United States. Both cross-sectional and trend analyses will be conducted in an ecological framework of individual characteristics and geographic conditions to elucidate factors associated with disparities in substance use disorders and treatment utilization. The longitudinal component of the study will identify individual and contextual socioeconomic and policy factors associated with remission of alcohol and drug use disorders using the 2004-2005 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC) data, a follow-up study of 2001-2002 NESARC respondents.
