Karen Trocki, Ph.D. Background Information and Areas of Research ktrocki@arg.orgKaren Trocki is a scientist at ARG and a social psychologist with special interests in group processes, the development of social norms, and the interaction of temperament and the social environment (its relationship to risk-taking, learning problems, conduct disorders and substance abuse). Trocki served as principal investigator and project director of Epidemiology of Alcohol: Risk of AIDS, a study funded by the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism. On-going analysis of this study examines the influence of alcohol and other substance use--which heightens the risk of AIDS and other sexually transmitted disease--on sexual behavior. As part of her work with Risk of AIDS project Trocki has: surveyed local and national general populations and multi-ethnic samples; conducted a national survey of adolescents and young adults; studied people being booked into jail; and most recently, conducted a study of clients at STD clinics. Her research on substance use and sexual risk behavior has increased interest in the physiology of risk-takers and the role that non-drug technologies play in early interventions to reduce substance abuse and related social problems.
