Bernadette B. Sangalang, Ph.D., M.S.W. Background Information and Areas of Research bsangalang@arg.orgBernadette Sangalang, Postdoctoral Fellow and Associate Scientist, received her doctorate in Social Work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She also has a B.A. in Social Welfare from the University of California, Berkeley, and an M.S.W. from the University of Washington. Her research interests include: vulnerable children and families and the public systems of care that serve them; children of alcoholics and substance abusers; adolescents’ transition to young adulthood; evaluating social interventions; and bridging research, policy, and practice. Dr. Sangalang’s previous research has focused on the social and health outcomes among teenage mothers, including pregnancy outcomes, alcohol and drug use, welfare participation, and child welfare involvement. Her current research examines the complex relationships between welfare, child welfare, and alcohol and drug problems. With supplemental funding from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Substance Abuse Policy Research Program, her study examines the current process, under welfare reform, of providing services for welfare families with alcohol and drug problems who are also involved with, or at risk of entering, the child welfare system.
