Epidemiology of Alcohol Problems

Component 7: Pilot Studies. (1) Alcohol Use and Alcohol-related Problems in Asian Americans; (2) Twelve Step Facilitation; (3) A Qualitative Exploration of Drinking and Acculturation among Filipino and Chinese Americans; (4) Assessing Alcohol Use and Related Problems: Examination in two samples in India

Abstract:

This component proposes a program and framework for conducting pilot studies to advance the Center’s research agenda and generate independent grant applications relevant to the Center’s focus on epidemiology and health services. A selection, monitoring and evaluation process for the pilot program is proposed to allow for redirection of individual pilots or the overall program throughout the life of the Center. Center scientists and postdoctoral fellows will be eligible to compete for pilot study funding, by submitting an abstract which specifies the research questions to be answered, the conceptual and methodological linkages to the Center, and rationale for performing the research as a pilot rather than under the small grant (R03) mechanism. Abstracts will be reviewed quarterly by the Center Core Steering Committee and in-depth proposals will be invited for those most relevant to the Center and the field. To insure that junior applicants are also able to successfully compete for pilot funding, mentorship will be made available from senior Center scientists to enhance integration with Center themes, Center datasets and existing Center studies. The first planned pilot will examine measurement and data collection methodologies to facilitate the collection of epidemiological and health service alcohol use data for Asian Americans. The second pilot aims to develop a mutual help-oriented intervention targeted for use within existing treatment programs. In addition to these two pilots, four other example projects are also put forward as potential studies that would compete for pilot funding for years 03 and 04 of the Center grant period. Year 05 will be reserved for evaluating the pilot program.
