Epidemiology of Alcohol Problems

Administrative Core

Abstract:

The Center leadership is housed in the Administrative Core and is the primary responsibility of the Principal Investigator/Scientific Director, Thomas Greenfield, together with two senior leaders, Associate Directors Cheryl Cherpitel and Lee Ann Kaskutas. They are joined in a Management Group by the additional Component Directors, Drs. Jason Bond, William Kerr, Marjorie Robertson and Karen Trocki. Dr. Greenfield directly supervises and provides scientific oversight for the Center’s research; the Associate Directors and he, as senior leaders, work together to assure coherence and scientific vision. The Management Group’s role is to ensure that Center and related independent grants are integrated, productive, and communicative; resources are marshaled; and scientific opportunities are developed into innovative grants. Biweekly Management Group meetings (monthly in Summer) assure that planning is proactive and that any problems that surface are rapidly addressed. Since projects in the Center must articulate closely, the Associate Directors and Director work with the management group on their linkages. Both Associate Directors also have distinct responsibilities for accomplishing the Center’s educational mission: Dr. Cherpitel leads scientific enrichment and dissemination activities (through the new Education Component). She will develop the staff enrichment programs and oversee communications with the public, policy makers, practitioners and research community (via, meetings, research briefs, newsletters, Web page, library, etc.). Dr. Kaskutas (who is also the NIAAA T32 PI), has broad responsibilities for training in the Center and will enhance trainee involvement both in Center research and enrichment programs. In aspects of training specific to statistical competencies, she is joined by Dr. Jason Bond (Director of the new Statistical and Data Services Infrastructure Core). In sum, the overall aim of the Administrative Core is to provide scientific leadership and a framework of support services that will ensure accomplishment of the research and educational missions of the Center. To achieve these aims, the Administrative Core functions to plan, coordinate and provide oversight for Center-related scientific projects; to facilitate use of the statistical infrastructure core and its training; to provide for fiscal management, clerical and library/information services; to liaise with academic and professional organizations; to assure that research translation occurs through the education component; and to enhance alcohol research career development and other enrichment activities.
